Editing is the process by which different visual and audio elements are sequentially put to- gether to achieve a narrative. Long before computers came, editing meant taking the film, watching the different scenes, physically splicing (cutttng) the shots and i i•ing them to—
gether. It required machines to watch each frame, see where the transitions could be made
and ensure that the narrative flowed seamlessly as the director had envisioned.
With the introduction of computers, it was no longer needed to physically cut and join tapes. Images were digitized and were stored in different file formats. These images or video could be then be edited using editing software. The editor did not need to go through sequentially to add and cut each shot. At any given point of time one could drop a shot in the middle or remove it. No wonder this was referred to as non-linear editing because though the narrative was linear with one shot succeeding another shot, the freedom and ability was there now to drop and remove a shot without changing what went before and

While here we will learn Adobe's Premiere Pro, which is tised for editing video, other software also follow the same principles. Once you familiarize yourself with one software, it is not difficult to pick up.other ones because the basics remain the same, even if short cure or some commands might be different.
